On the hottest May weekend in over 100 years, Derek and I participated in the Ottawa Race Weekend.
My 10K race was on Saturday evening in 30 degree temperatures. It down-poured while we were all standing in the starting corrals and we got soaked. My shoes got so wet that I ended up with a bruised toe nail which never happens on a race as short as 10K. My shirt was so heavy with the rain it was almost down to my knees. And then it just got muggy and sticky. It was ideal and fun in no way at all but I did it and I'm glad I did.
Sunday morning dawned even hotter than the day before as Derek laced up to take on his third marathon. The race started at 7am and the temperatures had risen so quickly that by 11am, officials decided to cut off about 10K from the race. Any runners who didn't make it to a particular part of the course before 11:00 would end up running a 30K instead of 40K. Still a massive accomplishment but definitely not a full marathon. Derek was well passed that spot before 11 so he ran a full marathon but, man oh man, he was hurting by the time it was over.
He was a solid 30 minutes slower than expected and was so very disappointed.
He did not look good when we saw him again.
His and hers medals.
